Have you ever noticed how often people forget your name within seconds of introducing yourself? Being personable seems to be quite a lost skill these days.
I try to take the time to ask people their name and actually remember it. You’d be shocked at how baffled people are when they realize that I’ve repeated their name to them later on. Everyone from my Waitress, Busboy, Postman, Cashier, at networking events, and so on…
Personally, I am really bad at remembering names, so I have to be conscious of this. I use tools to help me remember them easily (most commonly, I name associate in my head). If someone by the name Brad introduces themselves to me, I think of Brad Pitt when I look at them and it tends to stick. I often say, “Hello, my name is Lauren (like Ralph Lauren)” and in a group setting they always remember my name!
Another helpful tip is to repeat the individual’s name back to them right after they’ve told you their name. i.e. “It’s nice to meet you Amanda”
Your name has significance and you should be valued as a person. Once you start to practice getting to know and remembering people’s names, you’ll be happily surprised on the impression you make on others.
